Armenia: Citizenship by Descent
Citizenship by descent
How it works
Ethnic Armenian origin qualifies for citizenship. In practice, parent or grandparent level documentary proof is required, but no theoretical generational limit exists if ethnic origin can be documented. No language requirement. No residency. Dual citizenship permitted.
Things to know
- –Soviet-era passports often explicitly listed nationality (where nationality meaning ethnicity; "Armenian" was a common entry). These are strong proof documents.
- –Armenian Apostolic/Catholic baptismal records: Church records are widely recognized and often go back several generations.
- –Electronic portal since January 2026: Applications processed via mcs-citizenship.am
- –Very accessible: Armenia is one of the most diaspora-friendly citizenship programs in the world. No language test, no residency, no renunciation required.
- –Processing: ~17,000 people granted citizenship in first 9 months of 2025.
