Colombia: Citizenship by Descent
Citizenship by descent
How it works
Parent who is Colombian citizen: clear qualification. Grandparent: possible but the intermediate parent must also hold Colombian nationality (must register parent first if they haven't claimed yet). Voluntary renunciation breaks the chain. Colombians born by descent cannot lose nationality even by acquiring another.
Things to know
- –Pre-1991 gender rules: Colombia's pre-1991 constitution had gender restrictions; women who married foreign nationals could lose Colombian nationality under old law. Law 2332 of 2023 introduced recovery mechanisms for these cases.
- –Two-year waiting period: After voluntary renunciation, must wait 2 years before reapplying.
- –Statelessness protections: Added by Law 2332 of 2023.
- –Naturalization elsewhere does NOT strip CBD claims: For Colombians born by descent, this is a constitutional protection.
