Moldova: Citizenship by Descent
Citizenship by descent
How it works
Unlimited generational descent for those connected to the historic Bessarabia region (which became Moldova). Romanian language proficiency required. Many Moldovan CBD claims overlap with Romanian CBD claims (Bessarabia was part of Romania 1918 to 1940), so applicants should consider both Moldova AND Romania as parallel pathways.
Things to know
- –Moldova is not in the EU. Romanian citizenship (which many Moldovan-ancestry applicants also qualify for) grants EU rights; Moldovan citizenship alone does not.
- –Romanian overlap: Descendants of people from Bessarabia (part of Romania 1918 to 1940) often qualify for BOTH Moldovan and Romanian citizenship. Romanian is typically the strategically better choice for EU access.
- –Language: Romanian language required (Moldova's official language is Romanian).
Not sure if you qualify?
The Moldova: Citizenship by Descent pathway is relatively straightforward. Read the rules above and reach out if you have a specific question.
