Portugal: Citizenship by Descent
Citizenship by descent
How it works
Jus sanguinis: citizenship passes through parent or grandparent without residency. Third generation (great-grandparent) is allowed but requires language proof and effective connection evidence. Sephardic Jewish route now requires 3-year residency (no longer pure CBD).
Things to know
- –Sephardic route change (April 1, 2024): The Portuguese Sephardic Jewish descendant route, originally introduced in 2013 with no generational limit, now requires 3 years of legal residence in Portugal before applying. It is no longer a pure overseas CBD pathway. Screen this carefully.
- –No generational limit stated in law for standard route but in practice the 3rd-generation connection requirement effectively limits it.
- –Certificate requirement: Must obtain certificate from CIP (Lisbon Jewish Community) or CIL (Porto Jewish Community) for Sephardic route.
Getting started
- 1.Order Portuguese birth/marriage/death records
- 2.For 3rd gen: enroll in Portuguese language course, aim for CIPLE B1
- 3.Apply at nearest Portuguese consulate
- 4.For Sephardic: contact CIP (Lisbon) or CIL (Porto) for certificate
